South Africa ranked 14th strongest poker playing country in the world |

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) has released its 2009 World Standings and the Southern African team has been ranked 14th. This is an exceptional achievement for the All Africa Poker Team, which saw 23 of Southern Africa’s top players participating at 57 WSOP bracelet events over the six weeks of June and July, the most heralded, longest running and richest poker tournament in the world. The ranking is based on the number of players per country, their wins/bracelets and total money earned. Which is what makes the All Africa Poker Team’s achievement so extraordinary when comparing SA’s 23 players to the USA’s first place ranking with nearly 20 000 players! Canada was ranked in second position, with Russia third and the United Kingdom fourth. This remarkable achievement can be attributed to Warren Zackey who finished in 22nd place in the main event. However, Zackey wasn’t the only member of Team All Africa Poker who flew the SA flag high. Robert Kay took 7th place in Event 56 and was the first Southern African player participating in this year’s WSOP to make it to the top 10 in a bracelet event. Both Ryan Brauer and Melanie Banfield had very successful tournaments and made it into the money. All Africa Poker’s part-time commentator, Ryan Brauer was the 2nd best finisher in the Main Event from Team All Africa Poker when he exited in 500th position. The WSOP Final Table will resume play again on 7 November 2009, with one of the strongest Main Event final tables to have been assembled in years.
